Smoothies make for such an easy breakfast or snack. Especially in the summer, when we’re all craving refreshing, chilly foods.

I often just throw random ingredients together to make a smoothie, but having a recipe saves time and experimenting to get the right flavor combination.

I find lots of smoothie recipes to not have quite enough flavor, so I often add some frozen orange juice concentrate, frozen fruit like pineapple, peanut butter, or ginger to my smoothies to get big flavor.

These 20 simple single serving smoothie recipes are great for a breakfast or snack any time of the year. Enjoy.

Tips for a Better Smoothie

Before we get into the single serving smoothie recipes, I want to share a few tips to make your smoothies taste better, blend easier, and be more awesome!

Start with something soft. I’ve found that first adding yogurt, or a fresh banana, or not super frozen ingredients is helpful to blend better. When the food at the bottom isn’t blending up, nothing will.

Use a smaller blender jar (if you can), use that when making single serving smoothie recipes. If your blender jar is too big, there won’t be enough friction to blend up the smoothie well. Fitting more into a smaller jar is key.

Add a banana. A ripe banana, or perfect to eat plain banana is a great smoothie addition. 1. It blends so smooth, especially if it’s frozen. 2. It adds a wonderful sweetness. If you don’t want to add additional sweetener, a banana is great.

Like a thick smoothie? Banana and yogurt are great additions for a thick smoothie, start with less liquid, add more if needed. You can make any of your single serving smoothie recipes as thick or thin as you like.

Milk or juice are the best liquids. They add flavor. Plus, if you’re having your smoothie as a meal, milk adds some protein and maybe fat to feel more satisfied.

Orange Juice Concentrate is my secret weapon. Is OJ concentrate the tastiest ever? No, but its convenient, and if your smoothie is tasting a bit too sweet or like it’s missing something, adding OJ is the perfect tangy flavor boost.

Additions to turn your smoothie into a meal: peanut butter/other nut butter, Greek yogurt, milk, granola, seeds (like chia seeds or flax seeds), etc. These are great to add extra protein, fat, maybe fiber to help fill you up.

Make Ahead Smoothie Packs

I’m more of a throw together random ingredients into my smoothie, smoothie maker. That means that they usually turn out fine, occasionally amazing, and occasionally not so good. No disgusting smoothies….. yet.

If you’d rather not throw together ingredients or do lots of measuring in the moment, you can prep smoothie packs ahead of time. Add fruit, ice cubes of yogurt, even ice cubes of liquid? to a baggie, and freeze for later.

I’d still recommend adding your liquid, in liquid form because it helps the frozen ingredients blend together. But pre-measuring your ingredients will save you time. So give it a try, especially if you have lots of freezer space.
