S’mores are one of the most quintessential summer desserts. They’re the perfect camping dessert, along with Skillet Peach Cobbler. But they’re also delicious over a fire pit or even made inside.
Heating up the oven may be a bit too much during the summer. I get that. Someone recently asked me is it safe to roast marshmallows over a gas stove?
Yes, as long as you use your common sense. Marshmallows roasted on the stove are delicious (and my favorite! they really do turn out just like campfire marshmallows. But you can also make s’mores in the oven. Either way works.
This is such a tasty, and easy dessert for any number of people. Make one (or a couple!) for a single serving, or more for a crowd. Use the oven if you prefer golden brown marshmallows, or the stove if you like them burnt.
I prefer to toast marshmallows on the stove (I prefer burnt mallows!), but you can cook them in the oven too, just watch them closely, and don’t use a baking mat if your oven is on broil, it’ll get burned or break apart.

Graham crackers: Graham crackers are a classic s’more ingredient. Personally like the Honey Maid brand better than generic. You can also use cookies on either side of your mallow.
Marshmallows: Jumbo marshmallows are classic for roasting over a fire, but since you’ll be baking them in the oven, use whatever size you already have on hand. The smaller marshmallows will cook faster than bigger ones.
Chocolate bar: Use your favorite chocolate bar squares. Choose ones you’d enjoy on their own like milk chocolate bar, dark chocolate, or white chocolate. Chocolate chips are usually too small and would fall off a graham cracker.
Optional Toppings: berries, peanut butter cups, banana, swap graham crackers for chocolate chip cookies, Oreos, or other cookies. When you learn how to make s’mores in the oven, the options are endless.

This method is best if you like golden marshmallows for s’mores
Make s’mores in the oven if you like nice, light golden brown marshmallows. Scroll down to the recipe card for more detailed instructions. Here’s a quick overview + photos to see how to make this recipe in general.
1. How to make s’more in the oven: Move oven rack to 2nd to top level. Set oven to BROIL. Place 2 large marshmallows on a baking sheet pan. Check frequently. It should just take a couple minutes to cook.
You can also place a graham cracker, chocolate and then marshmallow on top and broil the whole thing. I like less melty chocolate, so I prefer to cook just the marshmallows.
2. Place toasted marshmallow on top of graham cracker and chocolate square. Add additional toppings, if desired.
3. Enjoy immediately. Make more s’mores in the oven if desired!

This method is best if you like charred marshmallows for s’mores.
1. You can cook s’mores over an electric or gas stove. But I don’t think you could use an inversion stove. Now you learned how to make s’mores in the oven or over the stove.
2. Turn stove to high, wait until coils (if electric) are red hot or flame is consistent on a gas stove. Spear marshmallow with a fork to roast over stove. Roast until desired doneness.

3. Assemble by placing chocolate and desired toppings on graham cracker halves, place marshmallow on top and cover with 2nd graham cracker. Enjoy your s’mores made in the oven.
Storage/Reheating Tips
If you haven’t used all the ingredients for s’mores in the oven, store leftover graham crackers, chocolate, uncooked marshmallows, and additional toppings in air tight containers/bags. Cooked marshmallows won’t hold over well, unfortunately.
Substitutions/Tips
Broil marshmallows on the 2nd highest rack for a golden brown or roast them on the stove (this can work with an electric coil or gas stove) for charred mallows. It’s up to you!
Check marshmallows often because they can burn quickly.
If cooking over a stove, hold marshmallow about an inch from flame or coil for a very brown marshmallow, hold about 2 inches for a slower cooking marshmallow that gets lightly browned.
Other great toppings: berries/fruit, banana, peanut butter cups, or sandwich your marshmallow between two cookies. Once you know how to make s’mores in the oven you’ll be able to experiment with lots of combinations.

Fun Toppings:
Berries: raspberries are my absolute favorite topping, but blueberries and strawberries are also delicious
Banana: take it a step farther by roasting your banana. Or just slice thinly to cover your chocolate square. It’s like a banana split but without the melty ice cream.
Chocolate covered peanut butter cups: ok, again dark chocolate fiend here, Trader Joe’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups are all I need in life, you can also totally use Reese’s. A smear of peanut butter is also so great.
BONUS: chocolate chip cookies. Instead of graham crackers, top a delicious chocolate chip cookie with your mallow and fruit.
